With Apple dominating the market for so long with the iPhone, it was quite obvious that someone was likely to fight back. Who better to fight back than Google?
According to NPD group, the Android has actually beaten the iPhone is terms of gross sales volume in the first quarter of 2010. Of course, this only relates to the US, but with such strong figures, it is not likely that they will slow down just yet.
As far as smartphone sales go in the last quarter, the Android boasts a huge 28% market share. Of course, this was slightly larger than the market share obtained by Apples’ iPhone, which retained just a 21% market share. That being said, neither could match up to the strength of the Blackberry, which maintained its market lead at 36%.
The thing is, that is only for the last quarter, in the grand scheme of things, the Android is an underdog. Look at the total market share statistics and you will soon be able to see. It is still inferior in comparison to RIM, Apple and Windows Mobile. It held around 9% of the market as of February 2010. In the grand scheme of things, this is small, especially as the iPhone holds over 25%.
Here is an interesting fact though; the likes of the Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and WebOS are all declining in sales. They have been out, the novelty of these items is definitely wearing off and people are looking for a new alternative.
Maybe the launch date of the Android has added to its success, with all the other new phones lagging behind – people want something new and innovative.
Verizon Wireless is also likely to be the main contributing factor to the success of the Android. They had an aggressive but successful marketing strategy from day one, and it certainly seems to have paid off.
